AN ODE TO SHISHAM

By: M.I. Sheikh

SHISHAM THE GRAND OLD TREE OF PAKISTAN

PROSPERED FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS

A PARAGON AMONGST ITS CLAN

FOR ITS FUTURE WE HAD NO YEARS

BEHOLD! IT HAS BEEN AFFLICTED

WITH A DISEASE OF WHICH NON IS SURE

ITS PLANTING WILL HAVE TO BE RESTRICTED

AS THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE CURE

THE RICH AND THE POOR HAVE EQUALLY BEEN BLESSED

WITH ITS TIMBER, FODDER, AND FUEL

SHALL IT NOW LEAVE US DISTRESSED

HOW A BENEFACTOR COULD BE SO CRUEL

WE SHALL NOT ALLOW IT TO DISAPPEAR

FROM THE LANDSCAPE IN AN INSTANT

BUT THE MESSAGE IS LOUD AND CLEAR

PLANT TREES WHICH ARE RESISTANT

RESEARCHERS SHOULD CONTINUE TO STRIVE

THERE IS NO CAUSE FOR DESPAIR

SHISHAM WILL ULTIMATELY SURVIVE

OUR SCIENTISTS POSSESS THAT FLAIR
