Dish Solar Cooker

Today, almost half of humanity is using firewood to cook. But due to deforestation and desertification, 500 million people are struggling to gather firewood to cook.

Goal

To develop, manufacture and distribute, free of charge, an innovative cooking device powered by solar energy especially in areas where the Juniper Forests are faced with an existential threat.

Utility

This device can cook all the conceivable dishes of choice. It uses free, clean, and inexhaustible solar energy that is available throughout the year – from sunrise till sunset. It saves valuable time for women as they walk several kilometers, several times a week, to collect fuelwood.

The Process

The cooker uses a dish that resembles a conventional dish antenna ante still used in far-flung rural areas to receive TV programs. The dish can either be an old dish antenna, or a newly customized one, specially designed for this purpose, and fixed with pieces of glass to reflect heat energy and to focus it in a smaller area to ensure the generation of greater heat energy.

The Purpose

Based on the principles of the existing technologies, we plan to ensure a zero-emission, highly efficient solar cooker to initially meet the needs of communities living around Zarghoon Forests located near Quetta (Balochistan). We believe that this will be a device of its type to have at least as much performance as firewood or gas and will thus allow women to make all of their food dishes without using wood.

Advantages of the Dish Solar Cooker

Following are the major advantages that can be attributed to this solar cooker:

  • A very potent tool in the fight against deforestation and desertification
  • An essential instrument for the rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems
  • It has no smoke as such no CO2 emissions and no health hazards
  • A product that can return its investment in 12 to 18 months
  • If properly maintained, it can last for up to ten years
  • It has simple settings with a user-friendly energy efficiency
  • It is an energy source that is safer to handle than bio- and fossil fuels
  • Though it generates up to 1,000o Celsius, the dish stays cold
  • It is particularly of tremendous utility as immense quantities of water can be boiled over it that can be used for sanitation and washing clothes

Disadvantage of the Dish Solar Cooker

The only disadvantage that it has is that it cannot work under cloudy conditions.

The success of the Project

The success of this project will depend on strictly monitoring its use by the households to have proper socio-cultural integration and to ensure its sustainability.

Dish Solar Cooker Development, Maintenance, and Installation

To begin with, a certain number of pre-fabricated pieces of solar cooking system would be imported through the financial support of partner organizations like FAO, GIZ, DfID, etc. With the permission and support of manufacturers, local smiths can be trained to initially produce a few pieces, on a trial basis, to be put to practice in areas to be selected. Once field-tested and improvements made, if any, devices can be mass-produced and distributed to the most deserving household on terms and conditions, to be determined.

The cost of production in the initial stages might be higher than what it should be but that will be because of the lack of skills and the limited number of dishes produced. With increased skills, the efficiency of production will increase and costs will come down. As the number of production increases, the cost of production will further come down.

Conclusion

It is expected that the time saved that is otherwise needed to collect fuelwood, the human energy wasted during fuelwood collection, the omnipotent health risks, the costs of medication, the number of days wasted during illness and convalescence when quantified and summed up, would be far more than the cost incurred on this wonderful dish. With soaring demand, the device will be more anchored in the market, tend to become autonomous, viable, a permanent source of income generation to the producers, and the raw material providers, and on the other, a device with zero-emissions, and a healthy and happy household.

In the end, it will be a win-win situation for those involved with this wonderful dish, directly and indirectly.
