Mulching – Types, Method, and Benefits of Mulching

Mulching

A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of the soil. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area. A mulch is usually, but not exclusively, organic in nature.

Mulching is one of the simplest and most beneficial practices you can use in the garden. Mulch can be simply a protective layer of a material that is spread on top of the soil. Mulches can either be organic – such as grass clippings, straw, bark chips, and similar materials – or inorganic – such as stones, brick chips, and plastic. Both organic and inorganic mulches have numerous benefits.

Types of Mulching

There are two types of mulching

  1. Organic mulching
  2. Plastic mulching

Organic mulching

Organic mulches improve the condition of the soil. As these mulches slowly decompose, they provide organic matter which helps keep the soil loose. This improves root growth, increases the infiltration of water, and also improves the water-holding capacity of the soil. Organic matter is a source of plant nutrients and provides an ideal environment for earthworms and other beneficial soil organisms. _ Source

The following items can be used as mulch in it:

  • Falling dry leaves, weeds, remnants of flowering plants
  • Crop residues
  • Corn husks
  • Wheat straw
  • Rice straw
  • Sugarcane peel
  • Shredded wood (wood chip)
  • After pruning mango and other orchards, cut back and use as mulch
  • Animal feed

Plastic mulching

Black or any dark plastic sheet is spread under the canopy of plants. It is not usually successful in gardens. Because in extreme heat, the ground under the mulch gets warmer.

Method of Mulching

  • Make a 12-inch high bed 8 to 10 feet below the canopy of the large mango plant and mulch it with the available mulching material. The purpose of making a bed is to ensure that irrigation or rainwater does not stand along the trunk of the plant. Over time, that is likely to change.
  • Mulching can be done from 1 inch to 12 inches.
  • Dense mulching is best for covering weeds and grasses.
  • Do mulching in hot or cold weather.
  • Do not mulch in the rainy season, otherwise, there is a risk of fungus due to moisture.

Benefits of mulching

  1. Mulching protects plants from extreme cold and heat.
  2. Mulching keeps plants green and healthy.
  3. New plants grow faster with mulching.
  4. Mulching eliminates weeds.
  5. Mulching reduces fertilizer use.
  6. De-composing over time makes natural fertilizer available to plants.
  7. Mulching provides a natural environment that reduces the incidence of diseases and pests.
  8. It saves gardeners time and money.
  9. Water is saved.
  10. The fruit is more fragrant and delicious.
  11. Protects the soil from erosion.
  12. Reduces compaction from the impact of heavy rains.
  13. Conserves moisture, reducing the need for frequent waterings.
  14. Maintains a more even soil temperature.
  15. Prevents weed growth.
  16. Keeps fruits and vegetables clean.
  17. Keeps feet clean, allowing access to garden even when damp.
  18. Provides a “finished” look to the garden.
