Plant Nursery Importance and Types

What is a Nursery?

A place where plants are grown commercially, either for sale direct to the public or to other retailers. OR;     An area where we grow and nurse young progeny (an offspring of a person, animal, or plant) of plants is called Nursery.

A plant nursery is a place where plants are propagated, grown, and sold for gardening or landscaping purposes. Nurseries may specialize in a particular type of plant, such as annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, or shrubs, or they may offer a wide variety of plants for sale.

Some nurseries also sell gardening supplies, such as soil, mulch, fertilizers, and potting containers. Many nurseries offer advice to customers on how to care for the plants they have purchased, and some may also offer landscaping or garden design services.

Forest Nursery

A forest nursery is a place where trees and other woody plants are propagated and grown for the purpose of reforestation, afforestation, or landscaping. Forest nurseries may specialize in a particular type of tree, such as conifers, deciduous trees, or fruit trees, or they may offer a wide variety of woody plants for sale.

The plants grown in a forest nursery are often used to reforest areas that have been damaged by logging, fire, or other disturbances, or to establish new forests in areas where trees are not native.

Forest nurseries may also grow trees for use in landscaping projects, such as parks and gardens. In addition to growing trees, many forest nurseries also sell seedlings, saplings, and other small plants, as well as forestry supplies, such as mulch, soil, and fertilizers.

Forest nurseries help to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of trees to meet the demands of these industries and to restore and protect forests that have been damaged or destroyed.

Purpose of Nursery

The primary purpose of a plant nursery is to propagate and grow plants for sale to the public. Nurseries may specialize in a particular type of plant, such as annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, or shrubs, or they may offer a wide variety of plants for sale. Importance of Nursery

Plant nurseries play an important role in the horticultural/forestry industry and in the development of gardens and landscapes. They provide a reliable source for a wide variety of plants, and many people rely on them for the plants they need to beautify their homes and gardens.

Nurseries also help to preserve and protect rare and endangered plant species by propagating and growing them in a controlled environment. In addition, they can help to educate the public about the importance of plants and the role they play in the environment.

Finally, plant nurseries provide employment and contribute to the economy by selling plants and gardening supplies to the public.

Establishment of nurseries is important for the following reasons:

  • Production of proposed size and age of seedlings.
  • Production of the desired number of seedlings.
  • Production of healthy plants of the desired spp.

Types of Nurseries

There are two types of nurseries:

  1. Temporary Nursery
  2. Permanent Nursery

Temporary Nursery

Those nurseries which are made for the time being ie for one or two years are called temporary nurseries eg Shisham nurseries at Changa Manga.

  • These nurseries are usually made in felling coups so that after felling, regeneration can be done easily or in those areas where afforestation work is needed.
  • Soil for these nurseries should be fertile because we do not give fertilizers to these nurseries.
  • These nurseries are raised along roadside and canal-side plantations.

Advantages of Temporary Nursery

  • Temporary nurseries are at the time called flying nurseries ie these can be shifted to any site.
  • Low capital cost
  • Reduced transport cost
  • Within climatic site conditions
  • Skilled labour is not required
  • Near planting site

Disadvantages of Temporary Nursery

  • Water supply may be poor
  • Soil may be poor
  • Shortage of trained labour
  • All can result in poor quality trees

Permanent Nurseries

Those nurseries which are not temporary but remain year after year are called permanent nurseries. E.g. nursery shown in the above figure

  • Such nurseries should be centrally located so that the distribution of plants may be easy.
  • It should be near headquartered so that it should be protected and supervised during work.
  • These nurseries should be manure and fertilized from time to time.

Types of Forest Nurseries

There are several types of forest nurseries, including:

  1. Bareroot nurseries: These nurseries produce trees and shrubs with roots that are not covered by soil. The plants are typically grown in containers or beds and are dug up and transplanted when they are ready for planting in the field.
  2. Containerized nurseries: These nurseries grow trees and shrubs in containers, such as pots or bags, which are filled with soil or a soil-less growing medium. This type of nursery allows the plants to be moved and transported more easily than bareroot plants.
  3. Field nurseries: These nurseries grow trees and shrubs in the ground in a field or open area. Field nurseries can be used to produce a wide variety of tree and shrub species, including those that are difficult to grow in containers.
  4. Specialty nurseries: These nurseries specialize in growing a particular type of tree or shrub, such as conifers, hardwoods, or native plants. Specialty nurseries may use any of the above methods to grow their plants.
  5. Seed orchards: These are specialized nurseries that are used to grow trees specifically for seed production. The seeds produced in these nurseries are used to regenerate forests or to breed new varieties of trees with desired traits.
